A water-cooled alternator uses engine coolant to remove heat instead of relying on airflow through the alternator housing. This allows the alternator to remain completely sealed against mud, water, sand and dust while still operating at the correct temperature.

Conventional air-cooled alternators draw outside air through the housing to keep themselves cool. Unfortunately, they also pull in mud, water, dust and sand, which eventually damages the internal components.
